Yvlie Jn Baptiste

President

Bio/Passion

Yvlie is a junior at Kalamazoo Central High School, where she is a member of their National Honors Society. She is a Cohort 2 graduate of the UrbanZone Mind Health Ambassador Program (MiHAP), and currently participates in UrbanZone’s Be B.R.A.V.E all-girls group, and the College Academic Success Team (C.A.S.T). While working at the UrbanZone, Yvlie has learned the importance of mental health and mindfulness, not just in her community, but for every community. Beyond UrbanZone, Yvlie is a Delta Sigma Theta Gem.

After graduating high school, Yvlie plans to major in psychology and sociology. Her mission is to inform youth around her of the significance of tending to their mental health and ultimately be a light to all of those around her.

What do you love about your UrbanZone experience?

What I love about working at the Urban Zone is that it’s like no ordinary job. I’m able to go to work after school and view it as a positive instead of a negative. To add to that, the Urban Zone is one of my safe spaces. If I had a rough day at school or my other extracurriculars, I go to the UrbanZone and I am able to confide in the people I work with; knowing that my business wouldn’t be shared with others. Above all else, I love the UrbanZone because of the community that it builds. As President, I have seen all aspects of the UrbanZone, whether it be our programs or our events that we hold, and one thing they all have in common is community. I have witnessed people from completely different backgrounds come together as friends and companions. And not just friends for the time being, I mean enduring friendships. So, like I said in the beginning, the UrbanZone is no ordinary job where I work to get paid. It is my safe haven.
